Background

Many of the fifty parishes and two chapels were established during the early decades of the twentieth century in towns where mining, railroads, and agriculture were the primary economic activities. Even though there has been a general population shift to the larger cities in the latter decades of the century, the holy and Apostolic Orthodox faith has remained a steady presence to the present day in the smaller towns because of the deep faith of the founding fathers and their descendants.

The parishes of the Metropolis continue to grow, gaining members both from those who desire to convert and embrace the Orthodox Christian faith as well as from newly-arrived immigrants from traditionally Orthodox countries. In the spirit of Pentecost, and in recognition of these origins, it has become the common practice in most parishes to read the Lord’s prayer in Arabic, Latin, Slavonic, Ukrainian, Romanian, and Spanish languages, as well as in Greek and English.
